Buy coffee beans online from a Sussex speciality roaster
Every bag of coffee beans on this page is freshly roasted to order at our Burgess Hill roastery on our Loring S35 eco-roaster. We work directly with producers in Rwanda, Costa Rica, Brazil and Kenya, and source the rest of our range through importers who share our commitment to transparency and fair prices. Whether you're looking for everyday espresso beans, single origin filter coffee, or something rare and exclusive, you'll find it here — roasted, packed and shipped fresh from Sussex.
Where our coffee beans come from
Rwanda — We've worked directly with the Bwishaza co-operative for over 10 years. Our Bwishaza coffees showcase the elegant, tea-like complexity that East African washed coffees are known for.
Costa Rica — Long-term direct trade relationships in the West Valley and Tarrazu region, producing a range of amazing coffees with diverse tasting notes.
Brazil — The backbone of our blends. Natural and pulped natural processed coffees with classic chocolate, nut and caramel character.
Kenya — Bright, juicy, blackcurrant-driven coffees from producers we've been buying from for over 10 years.
Colombia, Peru and beyond — Sourced through our trusted importer partners, including Cofinet, with the same focus on traceability and quality.
How to choose the right coffee beans
Single origin vs blends
Single origin coffee beans come from one farm, washing station or co-operative — they showcase the distinctive character of a place, varietal and processing method. Expect more pronounced tasting notes: fruit, florals, chocolate, citrus. Blends combine two or more coffees to create a consistent flavour profile that's easy to brew day-to-day. Our Workhorse and Nova blends are popular with milk-based drinks and cafetiere brewing; our single origins reward filter and pour-over methods, though they all perform on espresso too with the right care and attention.
Light, medium and dark roast
We roast our coffee beans to highlight the character of each green coffee, not to fit a roast colour. Most of our single origins sit in the light-to-medium range to preserve sweetness, acidity and origin character. Our Nova blend is roasted slightly darker for a more traditional, full-bodied cup. Whole bean or ground?
Whole bean coffee stays fresh longer and produces a noticeably better cup when ground just before brewing. We always recommend buying whole beans and using a quality burr grinder. If you don't have a grinder, we're happy to grind to order — just choose your brew method at checkout.
Espresso, filter or both?
All of our coffee beans are roasted with an "omni" approach, meaning they work well across brew methods. That said, the Workhorse and Nova blends are particularly forgiving on espresso, while our single origins tend to shine through pour-over, AeroPress and cafetiere. For more guidance, see our espresso coffee beans collection.
Choosing Coffee Beans
Coffee Bean FAQ's
How fresh are your coffee beans?
We roast to order, several times a week. Your coffee beans are typically dispatched within 7 days of roasting and will be at their peak for the following 4–6 weeks. We recommend resting coffee for 10 days before brewing for best results.
Should I rest coffee beans before brewing?
Yes — we recommend resting your beans for 7–14 days after the roast date before brewing, particularly for espresso. This allows for degassing, better flavour clarity adn easier espresso extraction.
How long do coffee beans last?
Whole bean coffee is best within 4–6 weeks of the roast date. Ground coffee should be used within 1–2 weeks. After this, the coffee won't be unsafe — just less vibrant.
How should I store coffee beans?
In an airtight container, away from light, heat and moisture. Avoid storing coffee in the fridge — temperature changes cause condensation. Cool, dark and dry is ideal. Freezing coffee is also a good option as long as the bag sealed and airtight.
What is speciality coffee?
Speciality coffee has an SCA score of 80+ points when assessed by qualified coffee graders. All of our coffees score 80+ points, and the majority of our speciality coffee scores are 85+ points.
Our rare and exclusive coffees will be assessed as scoring 87+ points with very distinctive and often unusual tasting notes.
Which specialty coffee beans should I use for espresso?
Our Nova and Workhorse coffee beans are great for espresso (especially if you love chocolate/nutty notes) but if you enjoy more complex, juicy flavour profiles then all of our single origins can be used for espresso too!
Our blends tend to be easier to dial in are more forgiving on espresso. All of our single origins can be used to make espresso but might require more grinder adjustments and longer extractions. Brew recipes for our coffee beans can be found on each coffee page.
Which coffee beans should I use for filter?
If you are looking for bright flavour notes, we'd suggest one of our great Single Origin Coffees. For more complexity, take a look at our Rare & Exclusive Coffees
We also recommend our more traditional blends, Workhorse and Nova for those who want to brew cafetiere or drink their filter coffee with milk.
How ethical is your specialty coffee?
Our coffee beans from Brazil, Costa Rica, Rwanda and Kenya are traded directly making sure that growers receive a fair price for their hard work.
Coffees that we don't source from producers directly, are bought from specialist importers. We choose to work with importers that have similar ethical values and are focusing on paying prices that are well above fair trade.
You can learn more about this in our Transparency Report.
