How to choose the best coffee beans for your brew
Filter Coffee Beans FAQ's
What are filter coffee beans?
Filter coffee beans are coffees that work particularly well when brewed using immersion or pour-over brewing methods such as V60, Chemex, AeroPress or French press. These methods tend to highlight clarity, aroma and delicate flavour notes, allowing you to taste the unique characteristics of the coffee’s origin, variety and processing method.
Can you use any coffee beans for filter coffee?
Yes – technically any coffee beans can be brewed as filter coffee. However, coffees with bright acidity, sweetness and clear flavour notes often perform best with filter brewing. At Horsham Coffee Roaster we roast all our coffees to be versatile, meaning they can work across multiple brew methods including filter and espresso.
What grind size should I use for filter coffee?
Filter coffee typically requires a medium to coarse grind, depending on your brewing method. Pour-over brewers like the V60 usually work best with a medium grind, while French press requires a coarser grind.
Which brewing methods are best for filter coffee?
Filter coffee beans can be brewed using a wide range of manual brewing methods, including:
- V60 / Pour-over
- Chemex
- AeroPress
- French Press
- Automatic filter coffee machines
Each method produces a slightly different flavour profile, but all are designed to highlight the coffee’s natural clarity and complexity.
How much coffee should I use for filter brewing?
A common starting point is a 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio, which means using around 15–18g of coffee for every 250ml of water. This can be adjusted depending on your taste preferences and the brewing method you’re using.
