  • About Wahana Estate Washed | Indonesia

Grown at 1,250–1,450 masl in Sidikalang, North Sumatra, this lot comes from Wahana Estate — the largest private coffee estate in Indonesia.

This lot is P88, a variety with an unusual pedigree: it originated from a Dutch varietal trial in the 1980s and traces back to a Colombian Catimor, arriving via Thailand and Kenya before being planted in Sumatra.

Unlike the Giling Basah (wet-hulled) method typically associated with Indonesian coffee, this lot is processed using the washed method. Ripe red cherries are delivered to Wahana's own on-estate mill (built in 2007), where they're washed, sorted and pulped. The parchment is fermented for 12 hours to break down the remaining mucilage, then dried over 7 days using a combination of covered patios and mechanical driers, depending on space and weather.

This is a coffee with a very distinctive and unusual flavour profile. Tasting notes include clementine, raisin and matcha tea.

The Producer

Wahana coffee estate

Indonesia's largest private coffee estate — 468 hectares at 1,250–1,450 masl in Sidikalang. Home to 200 families and 1,000 workers, with free housing, healthcare, school and church on site. 250 hectares grow coffee; the rest yields vegetables and tea. An entrepreneurial estate focused on experimental varietals and boundary-pushing processing.

Coffee Origin

Indonesia

Indonesia produces a wide variety of coffees from various areas, including Sumatra, Sulawesi, and Java. We try to source distinctive and unusual natural and washed processed coffees from this interesting region.

Processing Method

Washed

The washed process is the traditional method where the fruit is removed from the bean after harvest using water and de-pulpers. The coffee is sometimes fermented to break down remaining sugars before being washed in grading channels and then dried. This results in a “clean” cup that highlights the bean’s inherent origin characteristics and bright acidity.

Coffee Varietal

Mixed Varietals

This coffee may include several different coffee varietals. On many farms, multiple cultivars are grown side-by-side and harvested together. In other cases, a coffee may be composed of several components selected to create a balanced flavour profile. Each varietal contributes its own characteristics to the final cup.
