  • About Gibuzale washing station | Uganda

Situated at 1,900 metres above sea level on the slopes of Mount Elgon, Gibuzale washing station is the highest and most remotely located washing station operated by Kyagalanyi. All participating producers are smallholders whose families have grown coffee for generations. The average farm size is only around 1 hectare, and on this land most families also grow a variety of subsistence crops such as matooke (cooking banana) and fruit trees, beans, peas, millet and coco yam.

After delivery, the coffee is floated to remove defects, pulped and left to ferment before washing in grading channels. This is the typical washing method used in most east African countries and produces coffee with clean, bright tasting notes. These include mandarin, honey and milk chocolate.
