  • About La Isla SL28 natural | Costa Rica

This is a fantastic SL28 varietal, natural processed coffee from La Isla farm in the West Valley, Costa Rica. Over the past few years, they have won several cup of excellence awards. We have just 60kg available of this stunning high cup score coffee.

La Isla is owned by Luis Padilla, who bought the farm in 2017. He was inspired by his grandfather, who owned a coffee farm for many years in the Naranjo region. The farm covers 10.5 hectares and is located at 1500 masl, growing a mix of Villa Sarchi, Geisha and SL-28.

This coffee has been harvested from SL28 varietal trees. After harvest, the coffee was very carefully hand-sorted and dried on raised tables.

Coffee Origin

Costa Rica 🇨🇷

Costa Rican farmers are known for their tendency to experiment with various post harvest processing method and for planting rare and interesting coffees, such as SL-28 and Geisha. We've been buying our Costa Rican coffees direct from the same producers for several years with the help of Selva coffee.

Processing Method

Natural

The natural process is the most traditional method, where whole cherries are dried intact in the sun. As the fruit dries around the bean, it imparts a heavy body and intense fruit flavours. When well-executed, it produces a sweet and fruity coffee.

Coffee Varietal

SL28 and SL34

Both SL28 and SL34 were developed by Scott Laboratories in Kenya in the 1930s and 40s, selected for drought resistance and high yield. SL28, thought to have origins in a drought-resistant varietal from Tanganyika, is celebrated for its extraordinary cup quality – bold, complex, and bursting with blackcurrant acidity that has become the signature of Kenyan coffee. SL34, likely descended from Bourbon, shares many of those bright, winey characteristics and performs particularly well at high altitudes and in heavy rainfall. Together, they define the renowned Kenyan cup profile.
