This year's Christmas blend contains the following 3 great coffees:
Rwanda Bwishaza
Varietal – Red Bourbon
Preparation – Washed
Location – North of Kibuye
Altitude – 1600+ masl
In 2015, we visited the Bwishaza co-operative for the first time and have been buying coffee from them every year since our first visit. Bwishaza washing station is co-operative owned and works with around 500 small-hold farmers. Most of these producers have just a few hundred trees and will harvest coffee every few days during the season, which runs from March to June. Our Rwanda natural coffee has been directly traded with producers and we are able to offer full transparency and detailed information on these coffees.
Costa Rica El Mirador
Varietal – Villa Sarchi, some Catuai
Preparation – Natural
Location – West Valley, Costa Rica
Altitude – 1500 masl
El Mirador is located in the West Valley to the north-west of the capital, San Jose. The farm altitude is around 1500 masl and is located on the southern slopes of two volcanoes. El Mirador is owned by Olman Aguilera, a second-generation coffee producer. His family have been involved in coffee production for several decades. His coffee is processed as a patio dried natural at a local dry mill helping to create wonderful fruit flavours.
Brazil Daterra Estate
Varietal – Various
Preparation – Pulped Natural
Altitude – 1000 masl
Daterra is a large and well established Rainforest Alliance certified coffee farm. The estate covers an area that has 40% of the land dedicated to coffee production and 60% left as a private nature reserve. They focus on producing a wide range of coffees and we've selected a coffee with a flavour profile that is perfect for espresso.
This coffee is great for multiple brew methods and works very well in milk based drinks. If you like a medium roast filter coffee or cafetiere with lots of body, and if you tend to use milk, then this will work well too.
Tasting Notes:
We've created this blend to showcase the wonderful flavours of Christmas time! The Brazil contribute chocolate and nut flavours with the Rwanda bringing a lovely sweetness with notes of cherry and caramel. The El Mirador natural adds a lovely syrupy layer that includes dates and raisins (think Christmas cake!).
Brewing:
This coffee works well for all brew methods.
Filter: Dose 15g, water 250g.
Espresso: Dose 18 gram to 40 gram yield over about 30 seconds.
This coffee is available as whole bean and pre-ground but we recommend always grinding fresh before brewing. We sell a range of grinders if you would like to grind this coffee fresh at home.
