  • About Arturo Arango Sudan Rume | Colombia

Arturo Arango is a young coffee farmer who has been producing coffees since 2015. He owns El Paraiso a 25 hectares farm located at 1300 m.a.s.l. in Barcelona, Quindío. This stunning microlot was harvested from Sudan Rume varietal trees and processed using a unique and complex thermal shock method.

Upon arrival, cherries are floated in water tanks to remove lightweight beans and debris. The water is reused for multiple batches, then filtered through specialised tanks before being irrigated onto vetiver grass beds. This natural filtration purifies the water and releases oxygen.

The cherry is hand-sorted to remove any underripe, overripe, or defective ones, ensuring only premium cherries proceed.

This lot uses a 30 hour wet fermentation method in tanks before being pulped, washed and dried on raised beds. They do this controlled fermentation process as it allows the sugars, organic acids, and other compounds within the cherries to break down gradually, stimulating the development of a complex profile.

This is a stunning high cup score microlot scoring 87 points. Tasting notes are complex and include apricot, papaya and white grape

Processing Method

Washed

The washed process is the traditional method where the fruit is removed from the bean after harvest using water and de-pulpers. The coffee is sometimes fermented to break down remaining sugars before being washed in grading channels and then dried. This results in a “clean” cup that highlights the bean’s inherent origin characteristics and bright acidity.

Coffee Varietal

Sudan Rume

Sudan Rume is a rare and highly prized Arabica varietal originating from the Boma Plateau in southeastern Sudan close to the border with Ethiopia. Renowned for its extraordinary cup quality, it typically delivers a complex profile with pronounced floral aromatics, bright citrus acidity, and a silky, tea-like body. It remains uncommon in commercial production due to low yields and susceptibility to disease, so when it appears on the speciality market, it commands serious attention.
