Peru Eli Espinoza

Farm Overview

Eli Espinoza owns a 4 hectares of land in the village of Las Pirias, Chirinos. Elí’s parcels of land are spread across the village, some planted mostly with Typica, others with Caturra and Bourbon.

Eli came to the area as a teenager looking for work on farms, and he started out picking coffee in the village. After some time working and saving, he was able to buy his own land and a house, and started producing his own coffee.

Chirinos is a district in the province of San Ignacio and is one of the most well-known areas for quality coffee in Peru. Chirinos is well connected to nearby cities, with new roads and a thriving town, which serves as a hub for coffee buying and trade. Whilst the coffee landscape in Chirinos is still dominated by middlemen and FTO certifications, there is a growing interest in speciality coffee and some of the biggest cooperatives in the area have been promoting quality for a number of years. However, for those producers that aren’t members of coops, of which there are many, there is still little access to market and little support to invest in their farms and improve quality. There are a number of villages across Chirinos that have ideal growing conditions for coffee, with altitudes above 1700 masl, and many producers still have old pure Arabica varieties. There is still much potential in this area of Peru.

Eli has progressed from producing washed coffees scoring approximately 85 points, to officially producing the finest natural process coffee in Peru, scoring an incredible 88.73 points amongst the notoriously tough judging criteria. This natural is an explosion of fruit sweetness backed by a thick jammy finish; it is elegant, refined, with uncompromising confidence in the succulent punch it packs. Now’s your chance to secure the 8th place CoE Winner and Peru’s highest-scoring natural of all time!

Harvesting and Processing:

All of the coffee produces on the farm is carefully hand-harvested with most of this lot coming from Caturra trees and a small amount of the Bourbon varietal. After harvesting the coffee was very carefully sorted making sure that only perfectly ripe cherry was used to produce this natural processed coffee. The cherry was dried on raised tables under shade and carefully monitored to ensure the correct level of fermentation.

Peru Cup of Excellence Coffee
Once the drying stage is completed the coffee was submitted to the cup of excellence competition. It won 8th place with an overall cup score of 88.73 (averaged between all the judges). The coffees then go on to be auctioned using a global online system and this means that importers and roasters are able to get directly involved and the majority of the proceeds are paid directly to the farmer. You can read the exact details about how this works on the page What is Cup of Excellence

Delicious taster pack

We ordered the taster pack to try a few batches before we pick something larger next time… no idea how we are going to chose as they are all delicious. I love the packaging and branding too, will definitely buy from these guys again.

We’re not easily pleased - honest!

This is our new favourite. We were disappointed that our usual Kenyan coffee was not available, but true to form Horsham never disappoints. This has a slightly fuller depth and richness to the flavour and makes a perfect cup every time. We’re on our 2nd kilo now!

Makes my mornings that much better

I upgraded from a cheap blade grinder to this and the difference is night and day. Consistency is key when it comes to good coffee and until I got this I was making a completely different cup each morning. Now I really feel like I have control over my grind size and my coffee quality has improved massively.

Easy to use, easy to clean, well priced compared to others on the market, what's not to love?

Best so far

This is absolutely delicious , best coffee so far

Class grinder

I recently was looking for an electric grinder that would not be over expensive but better than the cheaper end models so after lots of reviews I managed to settle on the wilfa . I also watched a James Hoffmann YouTube video of this grinder and liked what he had to say . Now I’ve been using it a few weeks it’s superb and quite quiet and very quick at grinding 14g of beans in no time at all . Overall I expect it to last a long time as it’s well built and easy to clean
