Located in the Karongi district on the east of Lake Kivu, the Gishyita washing station was established in 2010 and is a co-operative organisation of 86 members. They have their own plantation of trees and receive deliveries of cherries from an additional 100 non-member farmers. Farmers will hand harvest coffee cherry and deliver on the same day to the washing station. The coffee is then hand sorted, followed by a second sorting via flotation tank, after which the cherry is pulped. Fermentation takes place for 12 hours in water followed by washing in traditional grading channels. The coffee is then hand sorted once more and shade dried for 1 day before further sorting and drying takes place in the sun. Such attention to detail in the sorting and processing has yielded excellent results in the cup.

We’ve been sourcing consistently excellent coffees from Gishyita since 2014 and were lucky enough to visit the washing station in 2015. That year 3,000kg of coffee produced cupped at a score of 85+ SCAA standard, and we purchased all of this high-scoring coffee. We visit the washing station each year during harvest to maintain and strengthen our relationship.
