Cup of Excellence is an international coffee competition run annually in participating coffee producing countries. Coffee producers are able to enter the competition by submitting coffees and these are then judged mutiple times by a pannel of global industry experts. This stunning natural processed coffee from a farm owned by Gemeda Elias Dube won 19th placed at the 2020 Ethiopia Cup of Excellence competition. You can read more about this on the Cup of Excellence website.

Farm Overview

Gemeda Elias Dube started working with coffee on his father's land at the age of 15. When he was 21 his father gave him 7 hectares of land to start his own coffee farm with full independence. He is now 32 years old and over the last 11 years, he's managed to expand his farm to cover a total of 86 hectares. This has allowed him the space to experiment with different varietals, processing methods and to focus on producing exception micro-lots.

Harvesting and Processing:

Coffee is hand harvested from Kurme varietal trees and very carefully sorted to ensure that only perfectly ripe cherry is laid out to try on raised tables. During the drying process, the coffee is sorted and carefully controlled to ensure very even drying.

Once the drying stage is completed the coffee was submitted to the cup of excellence competition. It won 19th place with an overall cup score of 87.79 (averaged between all the judges). The coffees then go on to be auctioned using a global online system and this means that importers and roasters are able to get directly involved and the majority of the proceeds are paid directly to the farmer. You can read the exact details about how this works on the page What is Cup of Excellence

Great Purchase for the indesisive

Loved that this was a selection of coffees, I got to decide for myself what I liked, and not too much of one flavour that I may not have liked.
