  • About San Juanillo Natural | Costa Rica

This is a truly unique and distinctive coffee produced specifically for us by our friends at San Juanillo and the Patalillo micro mill. This is now the 5th year that we have been fortunate enough to feature this stunning coffee. After harvest the coffee was fermented in sealed containers free from oxygen for 48 hours before drying on concrete patios as a natural. This is a stunning coffee with notes of lavender, pineapple, black cherry and red grape.

Costa Rica San Juanillo farm

The Producer

San Juanillo farm

Tomas Gutierrez and Allan Vargas bought the farm in 2007 with the intention of regenerating the landscape and soil and planting new and exciting varieties. We first bought coffee from San Juanillo farm in 2019 and have visited several times. They grow various varietals using natural farming methods that encourage insect and bird life.

So perfumed! Doesn’t matter the brew method, espresso or V60, the entire house smells of the coffee.

Very smooth

Love this coffee. Arrived on time and now wish I bought 1KG instead of the 500. But will be back for me if its still in stock!

All the Pinapple!!!

Brewed using a 1zpresso ZP6 Special (grind setting 3.5) and this coffee cupped super clean, with a lovely pinapple front and a delicate floral back. Very high quality bean and roast. And to think this coffee is going to get better with the next week. Can always trust Horsham to deliver.

Another Excellent Experimental Natural, this time from Costa Rica.

Opened this bag shortly after tasting the Brazilian one that I commented upon earlier.
Made brews using both my AeroPress and my Clever Dripper filter; not tried it with my Ninja Automatic Drip Filter machine, nor as a Cafetière.
Certainly, these beans make excellent flavoursome brews, just not quite as good (so far) as the Brazilian. Distinctive juicy prunes & tropical fruits with a silky smooth honey sweetness on the aftertaste. I am loving it.
At the moment, I am double-filtering our tap water for use in brewing our coffees.
Because we have traditionally soft water here, in the past I’ve been spiking our filtered tap water with recommended & controlled amounts of Mg2+ & HCO3- to help better extract all the flavours from the coffee beans. I stopped doing this a short while back (when they changed the source of our water supply), but now think I should re-instate my earlier special brewing methods, as they’ve changed the source yet again.
Hence, I’m going to do this as an experiment with these beans and the Brazilian ones.
I may then submit updated reviews.
Suffice it to say, like the Brazilian, this CM Natural Costa Rican is Excellent and Great Value For Money too.
I drink my coffee black, so only the very best Speciality Coffee Beans will do for me, and this is one such example.
I am really impressed with Horsham Coffee Roasters, so have moved their website link into my Folder of Top Nosh Roasters on my iPad. Highly Recommend.
