Peru - Cafe femenino co-operative 40%
Varietal – Various Preparation – Washed Location – Lambayeque region Altitude –+-1600 masl
Cafe Femenino is a project set up to support and empower women coffee producers around the world. It's been many years since we last had their coffee and we are very pleased to welcome this one back.
The coffee is produced by around 800 women coffee producers. They grow a range of different varietals including Typica, Bourbon and Villa Sarchi. Coffee is hand-harvested and delivered to local collection centres and taken for processing at a wet mill. Coffee is pulped to remove the fruit, washed and then sun-dried. This is a really great example of clean, juicy and well balanced organic coffee produced in Peru.
The following is taken from the Cafe Femenino website and explains a bit more about the project:
'Women in remote and rural coffee communities face a host of challenges that keep them trapped in poverty. Many of these isolated women live in male-dominated societies and have very little financial control or decision-making power.
In 2004, 464 women farmers in northern Peru decided to change this dynamic by separating their coffee production from the men’s. In that moment, for the first time, this group of women created their own product and income. Their coffee cooperative CECANOR joined their commercial partner Organic Products Trading Company (OPTCO) to create Café Femenino—a gender-focused program to support social justice and empowerment for women coffee producers worldwide.'
Brazil - Fazenda Jatoba 60%
Varietal – Red and Yellow Catuai Preparation – Natural Location – São João do Manhuaçu, Matas de Minas Altitude –800-1150 masl
Fazenda Jatoba is located in the Matas de Minas region and is organic certified. Jatoba is one of five farms owned by the Dutra family who have been producing coffee since the 1950s.
The DutraFamily manages their farms with a strong respect for nature. 35-40% of the farm remains under conservation, helping to preserve native flora and fauna. Brothers Walter and Ednilson have planted “green curtains” to protect against strong winds, which provide a natural, eco-friendly control against pests. The brothers also focus on the preservation of local water supplies and carefully manage the water used in their Fully-Washed and Semi-Washed processing. This effort to cultivate coffee amongst nature can however produce its challenges. The coffee plantations are planted among rocks, woods and waterfalls, meaning labour is difficult and expensive to retain. The mountainous landscape also means that brothers Walter and Ednilson are unable to use mechanical machines to harvest, again increasing the toll on pickers. However, it is this effort which in turn produces such a differentiated product, with Fazenda Jatobá’s coffees often classified among the best coffees in Brazil for both quality and sustainability.
We recommending buying whole bean coffee and grinding before brewing. We also sell 250g bags pre-ground. 1kg bags are available as wholebean only.

I like my single bean coffees for their individualism but I also like a blend and HCR really show off their skills creating this one. A great go to coffee fantastic in espresso and aeropress with the added satisfaction of supporting an organic product.

Amazing Coffee
I’ve never felt inclined to review a coffee before but this is something else. It’s strong but for me it’s flavour is absolutely perfect. Never been so impressed with a coffee.

Sweet, lovely coffee.
A really lovely, sweet blend with gorgeous social values and great flavour. Perfect for those (like us) who aren't big on bright, acidic coffees. This is a warm, balanced cup with just a bit of berry and hazelnut peeking through to add depth. Pleasant dark chocolate bitterness that never feels harsh. A crowd pleaser.

I tried a 5 sample pack from HCR and 12 samples from another company. The Rwanda was the run away winner and best choice for me, full bodied and a beautifully balanced flavour. I now have a monthly order in place
