This is a fantastic honey-processed coffee from the Aguilera Brothers in the West Valley, Costa Rica. They are very well known around the world as producers of fantastic speciality coffee and we first bought their coffee back in 2014!

We are super excited to be sourcing our Costa Rican coffees directly. We source our Costa Rican coffees in partnership with Selva Coffee, a small exporter representing a select group of coffee producers that we visited in February 2020.

These producers are located in the West Valley, Central Valley, and Tarrazu region of Costa Rica. You can read more about our direct trade coffees in our Transparency Report. The video below was filmed in February 2020.

Farm Overview

The Aguilera brothers are a group of 12 siblings who have been focusing on producing speciality micro-lots for over 15 years and are well know around the world. As a group they own several farms around the West Valley area of Costa Rica and their micro mill is located just a few minutes drive from La Isla micro mill, another fantastic coffee producer!

The farms are planted with a range of different varietals including Villa Sarchi, Catuai, SL28 and Geisha. Their focus is on producing mainly honey and natural microlots with varietal separation. We were fortunate to have been able to visit them in 2020 and you can see some of the incredible ripe cherry arriving to be dried on their own football field!

Harvesting and Processing:

This coffee has been harvested from SL28 trees. This varietal is mainly grown in Kenya and has become famous for producing coffee with amazing cup scores and vibrant acidity. You can read more about SL28 on the World Coffee Research website. When we cupped this sample the vibrant acidity and similarity to Kenya coffee is immediately obvious making this a unique and very different coffee.

After harvest the coffee is pulped using a Penagos Eco-pulper to remove the outer layer of fruit:

Once the outer layer of fruit has been removed the coffee is laid out to dry on concrete patios under the protection of a poly tunnel:

Tasting Notes:

This is lovely clean, bright, crisp and juicy honey processed coffee. It showcases wonderful sweetness with a crisp red apple acidity and notes of blackcurrant that reminds us of a fantastic Kenya coffee.

Brewing:

This coffee works well for all brew methods.

Filter: Dose 15g, water 250g.

Espresso: Dose 17 gram to 40 gram yield over about 30 seconds.

This coffee is available as whole bean and pre-ground, but we recommend always grinding fresh before brewing. We sell a range of grinders if you would like to grind this coffee fresh at home.

Bright, refreshing, delicious

A very enjoyable cup of coffee. Light and energising with a luxurious mix of caramel, vanilla and a hint of peach (I thought) and fig. Just right for breakfast or elevenses.

Smells and Tastes Incredible!

I’ve recently purchased a coffee machine and the advice was to get local coffee — it is usually the freshest. I decided to order the organic blend, and just the bouquet of the beans was enough to wake you up. It smelt incredible; the taste and the freshness exceeded my expectations — and my coffee machine loves them. I make a perfect espresso each morning. I will definitely be purchasing them again as and when needed.

Super fluffy

Fantastic quality grinder, built like a tank, super fluffy output, no static issues.

only flaw re usability is no auto off and touch buttons are not the most responsive so manual grinding is not most accurate

Subtle, very nice coffee

Had this in a coffee shop in Brighton then bought a kilo. It's an absolute belter you won't be disappointed.
