This is an exclusive microlot from La Betania in Paraiso, Tolima, Colombia brought to us by our friends at The Green Collection. They consistently source amazing small microlots from Colombia. This one is just 6 x 35kg bags from a small 8 hectare family farm.

Farm Overview:

The farm is owned by Brainer Rodriguez Barrera and is planted with Colombia F8 and Caturra at an altitude of 1900 masl.

Planadas is one of the most isolated coffee producing regions in the country and is high in the mountains between two national parks. The drive to Planadas takes around 12 hours from Ibague, the capital of the province. There are 48 coffee producing hamlets representing close to 7000 small farms. Many of these farms produce coffee that is sold for a low price into the commodity market but there are programs in place to train and encourage the production of separated small microlots with high cup scores. These are much more profitable to the farmers and we love being able to buy small individual farm lots through our friends at The Green Collection. 

Harvesting and Processing:

La Betania covers just 8 hectares and all processing is done on the farm. Coffee is first hand-harvested selecting only ripe cherry. After harvest the coffee is fermented in a cool storage area for 45hrs. The coffee is then pulped and fermented in tanks without water for an additional 45hrs. The coffee is then washed and dried on raised beds for about 15 days. This dry fermentation is very common in Colombia and is one of the contributing factors to the incredible and complex flavours. Fermenting dry increases oxygen exposure and once complete the coffee is washed to remove and residual fruit for the coffee is dried.

Tasting Notes: 

We love the juicy, complex flavours of this outstanding high cup score microlot.  Tasting notes include mandarin, orange, brown sugar and a wonderful floral aroma with silky chocolate body.

Brewing:

This coffee works well for all brew methods. 

Filter: Dose 15g, water 250g. 

Espresso: Dose 17 gram to 40 gram yield over about 30 seconds. 

This coffee is available as whole bean and pre-ground but we recommend always grinding fresh before brewing. We sell a range of grinders if you would like to grind this coffee fresh at home.
